  • Quality & Care

    • How do I know if my jeans are authentic?

Levi Strauss & Co. is committed to enforcing its trademark and property rights and to prevent the sale of counterfeit products bearing its trademarks or designs. However, we are aware of counterfeit Levi's® product being sold online or in unauthorised stores.

Characteristics of counterfeit products vary from case to case. Two of the most recognizable Levi's® trademarks on our jeans are:
      • The Tab Device® trademark on the back pocket.
      • The Arcuate Stitching Design® trademark on the back pockets. The Arcuate Stitching Design® trademark is easily recognized as the ‘double arcs’ displayed on each side of the back pocket.

In order to avoid the possibility of purchasing counterfeit jeans, we suggest you purchase our products from an authorised Levi's® dealers. On our website at eu.levi.com, you can buy jeans online or find a nearby store carrying Levi's® products, using the Store Locator.

    • How do I take care of my Levi's®?

In general for all Levi's® jeans
The more you wear and the less you wash them, the better your Levi's® jeans will look. Always check the wash & care instructions label inside the garment. Delay washing your new jeans or jean jacket for as long as possible. Instead, try hanging the garment out to air on the washing line to keep the time you are apart as brief as possible!

      Rigid jeans (Unwashed and Shrink-To-Fit®)
Buy your jeans 4-6cm longer and 4cm wider around the waist than usual - your garment will shrink to your normal size. Expect an overall shrinkage of 10%. Do not alter the hem of your jeans until the shrinkage process is complete.

How to shrink the jeans until they fit
Get into a bath full of warm water while wearing your new jeans and soak for at least 10 minutes. Drain the water away, squat down and squeeze the excess water out of the fabric. Stand up and - if possible - let them dry naturally while still wearing them. The jeans will mould about your body and retain your form for optimum fit. Alternatively take off the jeans and place them on a hanger to dry.

      The 1st wash

The first time you wash your jeans or jean jacket, wash by hand in warm water without soap. Soak the garment in the water for at least 10 minutes, moving it gently to prevent uneven colouration.

      Subsequent washes
Make sure you turn the garment inside out and hand-wash separately at 40°C, as the indigo colour is likely to run. Avoid soap as this causes the colour to fade. Most shrinkage will occur during the first three washes. However it can continue, if only slightly, until the 10th wash. If you must machine wash, follow the same rules as above for optimum results and minimal stress to the fabric. Always check the care label.

For jeans with a finish treatment
Jeans that are 'finished' (pre-washed, or otherwise treated) shrink less, about 1-3%. But don't alter the hem of your jeans until the shrinkage process is completed after around 3 -4 washes at 40°C. Always check the care label.

  • Archives

    • How do you build-up your archives?

Our historians receive many phone calls from consumers and vintage clothing dealers, all of whom have Levi's® clothing or memorabilia for sale. They also keep their eyes on items that are for sale on the latest online auction sites on the internet. They are given an acquisition budget, which they use to purchase these items for the archives.

    • What is the most valuable piece of vintage clothing you have in your archives?

Our rarest and most valuable item is a pair of jeans called "XX." They are a pair of 501® jeans from 1879, which the company acquired in 2003. They are called XX because the lot number 501® had not yet been used by the company. They are the oldest pair of jeans in the world, worth over $125,000.
